FROM DENMARK TO GREECE, NO FASCISTS IN OUR STREETS
The background
Perama is a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Athens and Pireaus. Historically this area has been populated by people of the working class. In addition the shipyards that exist there were always a space where communist unions operated and had power. However, after the rise of the 2008 economic crisis the tides in the area changed. Gradually and steadily, exploiting the increasing discontent of the people, the far-right gained power in the area. The vanguard of this fascist advancement was the neo-nazi party “Golden Dawn” which considered Perama as one of their strongholds. This area was of high importance for them as it was their way to gain access in the shipyards, the unions and eventually infiltrate the workers movement. Towards that direction in 2015 they opened a “shipyard workers union” in the area which throughout the years has proved its role as a union guided by and working for the interests of the capitalist ship owners and the ruling class.
The tides turned once again after the murder of the antifascist rapper Killah-P (Pavlos Fyssas). After continuous struggles the antifascist movement managed to stop the advancement of the fascists in the area, forced them to close down their offices in the area and their only space that struggles to survive was their so-called “union”.
The incident
On the 26th of May 2018 a group of about 15 antifascists from OR.M.A (Organisation of Militant Antifascism) were distributing leaflets and magazines at Perama as part of their weekly communication plan. When passing outside the fascist “union”, a group of 8-10 fascists, armed with steel bars and some of them wearing helmets or full-face masks started confronting the antifascists and eventually tried to attack them. The comrades, despite the initial surprise, managed not only to stand their ground but push the fascists back into their offices. As soon as the Nazis realised that they would end up humiliated if they continued the confrontation they starting making calls to the Golden Dawn PMs. Eventually the fascists filed lawsuits against the antifascists trying to make themselves look like the victims of the situation. Thus, all the antifascists were prosecuted to the central police precinct of Athens were six of them were “identified” by the fascists and arrested with charges for assault among others. The comrades decided to file lawsuits as well, as a first response against the fascists. Through that procedure 2 of the Nazis were also arrested. The trial, which started in June has been suspended till the 7th of November when the comrades will be in the courtroom again. The comrades will thus need our support in order to handle the costs for this legal procedure.
SOLIDARITY TO THE ANTIFASCIST COMRADES OF OR.M.A. FROM GREECE!
